Temple Explanation
Rinzai sect, Daitoku-ji school. In the first year of Kanbun (1664), Heizaemon O-gawa, a senior retainer of the Kuroda family, built this temple by inviting Zen Master Enkei Reitsu of Sōfuku-ji (Kobori Enshū’s nephew) for the memorial service of his late wife, his heir, and his young daughter. The temple still preserves the main hall and garden from the time of its founding.Address

Entrance
The approach to Eiju-in’s main hall is a pathway illuminated with light. From dusk until sunset, the colors gradually change with the time of day, expressing the passage of time. Like lanterns, the gentle flicker of light creates a soft flow from the entrance to the main hall, guiding visitors into a special space that exists only during this period.
Veranda
A lighting plan designed as if gently peeking through the window at a small garden quietly standing at the back of the entrance. The softly illuminated garden quietly deepens the anticipation for the special moments that lie ahead.
Courtyard
As the day shifts from afternoon to night, the world, once filled with light, loses its contours, and small lights and presences begin to stir in the darkness.
Because there is light, the darkness deepens, and when something is illuminated, it makes us aware of the existence of things we cannot see.
The light rising in the garden of Eijuin gently reflects the certainty of the unseen amidst this transition.
