Temple ExplanationZen sect of the Rinzai school, Myoshinji branch. Engaku-ji was founded in 1246 (Kangen 4) by the eminent monk Dōgen Zenji (Lanxi Daolong), who came from Song China. The “Nanpō Roku,” handwritten by Tachibana Jitsuzan, a samurai of the Fukuoka domain, has been passed down, and the temple is known as a place for practicing tea and Zen. Instruction is provided so that more people can become familiar with the Nanpō style of tea ceremony, which is a local tradition.
