Temple Explanation Before its founding, Hongakuji Temple was located in Gion Town (then Yakuramon) and was a Zen temple called ‘Hongakuji’ belonging to the branch temples of Shofukuji, with a monk named Saisho serving as its head. Saisho was reputed to be very strong at Go, and in August of 1496 (Meiō 5), Ninin Shonin of the Nichiren sect traveled from Kyoto to Hakata, and after a direct discussion, they agreed to play a high-stakes Go game for the temple. Since Ninin Shonin won, Saisho kept his promise and handed over the temple. It is said that Ninin Shonin converted the temple to the Nichiren sect, named the temple mountain ‘Saishozan’ after the previous head, and changed the temple’s name from Hongakuji to Hongakuji to Hongakuji to Hongakuji to Honkakuji.
