Temple Explanation
The Jōten-ji Temple, founded in the third year of the Ninji era (1242), was established by the prominent trade merchant Xie Guoming, who resided in Hakata and was active in foreign trade. He invited the Zen master Shōi Kokusai (Enni), who had studied in Song for six years, to become its founding head. Shōi Kokusai is also known for bringing back the methods of making ‘udon’, ‘soba’, and ‘manju’, thereby spreading the culture of flour-based foods, which is deeply connected to the origins of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival that started about 780 years ago.Adress

Lighting Point
The composition woven by light and shadow is like a painting. A beautifully fantastical scene unfolds, as if nature is framed within a border. In the forest of light where the night breeze gently blows, you forget the daytime hustle and embark on a journey of illusion. The mysterious light illuminating the shrine’s forest gently frees your heart from the everyday.
Sento Garden, Pathway
The drops of light gently reflect the memories and prayers accumulated in this land. In the stillness, the light becomes a “seed” that connects history to the future, quietly nurturing stories in the hearts of those who visit the Washoto Garden.
Kaisando Hall
Passing through the swaying glowing pampas grass and the quietly illuminated trees, I enter the hall. The Buddha statues, wrapped in gentle light, direct warm gazes towards the visitors, embodying the solemnity of a space for prayer.
Sanmon Gate, Chokushi Gate
The mountain gate welcomes visitors as a quiet entrance浮かぶ in the light. Its appearance, which conveys a sense of dignity and weight, symbolizes the spirituality of the temple, and the serene presence emanating from the usually closed imperial messenger gate quietly tells the depth of history.
This year’s concept is “Buddhist Realm Green Exhibition.” The Buddhist realm refers to the sacred domain of Buddhism, and it is considered that the old town area and the Chōten-ji temple grounds are part of that. In this plan, greenery will extend from the old town to the garden and then to the Buddha Hall, forming a gradual “Forest of Light” from physical nature to spiritual nature. Please enjoy the “harmony between the city and nature” through the design and effects of light.
