Kushida Shrine

Temple ExplanationHakata’s chief guardian shrine, affectionately called ‘Okushida-san’ by the locals. According to the shrine’s tradition, it is said to have been founded in the first year of Tenpyō-hōji (757) to enshrine and worship Ōhata-no-Ōkami, transferred from Ise Province. During the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every summer, the carried floats circle the sacred path within the shrine grounds at the signal of the early morning drums and then dash out into the streets of Hakata.
