Temple Explanation Ryugu-ji is a Jodo sect temple. The exact date of its founding is unknown, but it was originally located closer to the seaside and was called Ukimido. As temple treasures, it preserves the “bones of a mermaid” and a “painting of a mermaid.” Within the temple grounds, there is also a “Mermaid Mound” to commemorate the mermaid’s Bodhi, and the statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon in the Kannon Hall is one of the seven Hakata Kannon statues, traditionally attributed to Jikaku Daishi.
